Ivor Cutler

Contains 6 performances.

15 January 1923 – 3 March 2006.

Scottish poet, songwriter and humorist. Known for his regular performances on BBC radio, latterly including numerous Radio 1 sessions for John Peel and Andy Kershaw. Appeared in The Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour film in 1967 and on Neil Innes's various TV shows. Wrote books for children and adults and was a former teacher at Summerhill School.

Cutler's records generally followed a pattern: surreal deadpan poems alternating with fictitious episodes from his childhood 'in a Scotch sitting room' and songs accompanied by a wheezing harmonium.  Artistic collaborators included Robert Wyatt and Phyllis April King - the latter also being his life-partner.

    07 March 1985 at

Arts in Danger was a CAST New Variety initiative. This show does not occur in press adverts listing Arts in Danger Week events, but seems nevertheless to be in support of it. LKJ does not appear on the flyer, but is named (instead of Lioness Chant) in Time Out‘s listings.

    Anti-Apartheid Benefit

    4 September 1985 at
    Southbank Centre (29)
Apart from the great line-up and the great cause, this show surely boasts the best take on the ‘apple/snake’ motif to have graced an Apples & Snakes flyer. The circularity and the black/white symbolism are entirely appropriate, and that ‘apple of the eye’ is a touch of genius.
