Popticians

Contains 7 performances.

Four-piece band revolving around John Hegley (gtr, vc). The rest of the early '80s line-up was Russell Greenwood (drms, vc), Sue Norton (sx, vc) and Keith Moore (clarinet, vc) - the configuration for the two John Peel sessions they recorded in 1983 and '84. For many people, these sessions were their first introduction to the Hegley phenomenon. Hegley, Norton and Moore occasionally still perform together under the Popticians banner (Greenwood passed away in 1999).

This blog post tells you everything you could wish to know about their recording career.

The festival was headlined by Dr John, Fela Kuti and surprise guests Elvis Costello & The Attractions. It also marked the only Glastonbury appearance of The Smiths – a booking that was seen at the time as being out of kilter with the festival’s usual ethos. Meanwhile, in the cabaret tent…
